1948年，国际红十字会规定将国际红十字会创始人亨利·杜南的生日——5月8日设为世界红十字日，也就是“世界微笑日”。

世界精神卫生组织把这天订立为"世界微笑日"，希望通过微笑促进人类身心健康，同时在人与人之间传递愉悦与友善，增进社会和谐。世界微笑日也是唯一一个庆祝人类行为表情的节日。
